Job Description

Senior Power Electronics Engineer – MVDC

📍 Bologna

The Company

Our client is at the forefront of medium voltage power conversion, developing MVDC systems / grid-scale converters for various industries. Due to continued success, they are looking to expand their team with a Senior Power Electronics Engineer – MVDC

The Role

As Senior Power Electronics Engineer, you'll lead the design and development of MVDC power conversion systems from concept through to qualification. You'll own converter design end-to-end, topology selection, simulation, hardware design, and validation, while mentoring junior engineers and working closely with systems, controls, and mechanical teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop MVDC converters (e.g. DC/DC, AC/DC) at medium voltage levels (3kV–35kV class)
  • Topology evaluation and selection, modular multilevel, DAB, ISOP/IPOS series-stacked architectures, resonant topologies
  • Power stage design: semiconductor selection (SiC MOSFETs, IGBTs, series-connected devices), gate drive design, magnetics specification
  • Simulation and modelling (PLECS, LTspice, MATLAB/Simulink)
  • Insulation coordination, creepage/clearance design, and partial discharge considerations at MV levels
  • Lab prototyping, high-voltage testing, and design verification
  • Support compliance with relevant standards (IEC 61800, IEC 62477, IEEE 1709 as applicable)
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to design reviews and technical strategy

About You

  • Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (MSc/PhD advantageous)
  • 5+ years in power electronics design, with demonstrable experience at medium voltage (>3kV DC)
  • Strong grasp of MV converter topologies, series device operation, and high-voltage insulation design
  • Hands-on lab experience with high-voltage test environments and safety practices
  • Experience with SiC and/or high-voltage IGBT platforms
  • Comfortable owning designs end-to-end in a fast-moving environment

Nice to Have

  • MMC or solid-state transformer experience
  • Marine, grid, rail, or industrial DC distribution background
  • Experience taking products through certification
