Lead Power Electronics Engineer — DC/DC Converters | High Voltage up to 60 kV
About This Opportunity
Ampere Recruitment is engaged exclusively on this search on behalf of a well-established power electronics engineering organisation operating across semiconductor, industrial, and medical markets. We are seeking a Lead Power Electronics Engineer to take ownership of the design and development of advanced high-voltage DC/DC power conversion solutions up to 60 kV at the heart of a technically ambitious product development programme.
This is a role for an engineer who is as comfortable at a lab bench validating a prototype as they are presenting a design proposal to senior stakeholders. If you have deep power electronics design experience and want to lead technically rather than manage administratively, this is worth a conversation.
The Role
As Lead Power Electronics Engineer, you will drive the full design lifecycle of high-voltage power supplies and DC/DC converters — from initial concept through to validated production release. You will work as a key technical contributor within a focused engineering team, bringing together circuit design, magnetics, simulation, and hands-on prototype validation under one remit.
Specifically, you will:
- Lead the design and development of efficient, cost-effective power conversion circuits and power supplies to customer and regulatory specifications — spanning analog and digital circuits, embedded control logic, magnetics, EMI filters, and HV power stages
- Own the full hardware development process: schematic capture, PCB layout direction, prototype build, bench testing, and firmware/code development for embedded control
- Develop analytical models, simulation tools, and predictive design methods that reduce iteration cycles and improve first-pass design success
- Analyse test data against functional and performance specifications, identifying root cause and driving design resolution where required
- Lead prototype bring-up and debugging of power supply units in a high-voltage development lab environment
- Interface with internal engineering, programme management, and commercial teams to ensure design, schedule, cost, and quality objectives are met
- Summarise design results, document engineering decisions, and deliver technical proposals to senior management and customers
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- 8+ years of hands-on power electronics design experience, with a demonstrable focus on DC/DC converter and power supply development
- Strong working knowledge across the full power electronics design toolkit: analog and digital circuit design, magnetics design, EMI/EMC, thermal management, and embedded control
- Experience designing to customer and regulatory specifications across one or more of: semiconductor capital equipment, industrial, or medical applications
- Proven ability to take a design from concept to validated hardware independently, including schematic capture, layout, and lab bring-up
- Proficiency with circuit simulation tools — SPICE-based simulators, PLECS, PSIM, or equivalent
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; able to define the problem, collect and interpret data, and drive to a valid conclusion
- Strong communicator — equally capable of presenting technical detail to engineering peers and summarising results clearly for management
Desirable:
- Experience with Mathcad for analytical design documentation
- Familiarity with Cadence or Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB layout
- Scripting or test automation experience for design validation and test generation workflows
- Background in high-voltage design up to 60 kV, including insulation coordination and HV safety practice
Education
- BEng / BSEE or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related discipline. Equivalent experience considered.
