Job Description

Principal Power Electronics Engineer

Ampere Recruitment is partnering with a well-funded start-up developing next-generation power electronics for grid-connected applications. They're looking for a Principal Power Electronics Engineer to own hardware development end-to-end, shaping the architecture and direction of their core technology.

What you will do

  • Lead architecture, design, and development of power conversion systems (AC-DC, DC-DC, AC-AC), including high-frequency, high-power topologies, mixed-signal circuits, PCB layout, and EMI/EMC compliance.
  • Own system-level validation: test planning, verification, certification, root-cause analysis, and lab bring-up.
  • Act as Technical Lead — define system architecture and technology trade-offs, drive decisions across topologies, control strategies and magnetics, and lead design reviews and mentoring.
  • Maintain engineering documentation and contribute to technical presentations and customer-facing material.

What you will need

  • Degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or equivalent, with end-to-end product development experience from concept to commercialisation.
  • Strong track record designing high-voltage, high-power converters, with deep knowledge of topologies such as CHB, LLC, DAB, MMC in grid-connected systems.
  • Proficiency in SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, and Altium (or equivalent), plus hands-on lab testing with oscilloscopes, power analysers, and grid simulators.
  • Experience designing for manufacturability, reliability, and compliance in production.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership and strong cross-team communication; willing to travel nationally and internationally.

It would be useful to have

  • Experience with PCS, EV chargers, SST, HVDC/STATCOM, or MV VFDs.
  • CE/UL/TUV certification experience with external bodies.
  • Knowledge of grid synchronisation, protection, and stability, plus volume manufacturing and energy storage/renewable integration exposure.

Benefits

  • Employee Option Plan — equity in the business.
  • Private medical & dental cover via Bupa from day one (dependents optional).
  • Company pension, annual professional development budget, and flexible/WFH arrangements.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme, plus 2 extra "slow travel" days per year for low-carbon travel.
