Job Description

Lead Power Electronics Engineer

Location: Hampshire, UK

Type: Full-time
Sector: Power Electronics / High Voltage / Energy Systems

Overview

Ampere Recruitment is supporting a cutting-edge engineering organisation in the search for a Lead Power Electronics Engineer to drive the development of next-generation high-power conversion systems.

This is a hands-on leadership role, ideal for someone who thrives on taking ownership from concept through to validated, production-ready solutions within complex, high-voltage, multi-kW environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of advanced power electronic systems across AC-DC, DC-DC, and DC-AC conversion
  • Take ownership of projects across the full product lifecycle (concept → design → validation → test)
  • Define system architectures for high-voltage (up to 5kV), multi-kW power transmission systems, including multi-km cable applications
  • Design and optimise converter topologies including:
    • Buck, Boost, Flyback
    • LLC, Full-Bridge
  • Develop and implement AC conversion techniques, including PFC and multiphase systems
  • Specify and design custom magnetics and transformers
  • Lead simulation and modelling activities (e.g. PLECS, Simulink, SPICE tools)
  • Develop control strategies for power converters (analogue and digital)
  • Ensure designs meet EMC, safety, and regulatory compliance standards
  • Oversee system-level integration and testing, including validation plans and procedures
  • Collaborate cross-functionally (mechanical, firmware, systems teams)
  • Act as a technical leader and mentor within the engineering team

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Significant industry experience in power electronics design
  • Proven track record delivering end-to-end solutions (concept through to tested hardware)
  • Strong theoretical foundation supported by hands-on design experience
  • Experience with power transmission systems (AC & DC), particularly over long cable distances
  • Deep knowledge of converter topologies:
    • DC: Buck, Boost, Flyback, LLC, Full-Bridge
    • AC: Single-phase, multiphase, PFC
  • Experience designing AC-DC, DC-DC, and DC-AC converters
  • Hands-on experience with MOSFETs, IGBTs, SiC, and GaN devices, including gate drive design
  • Experience working with high voltage systems (up to 5kV) and multi-kW power levels
  • Strong experience in magnetics design (transformers, inductors)
  • Proficiency in simulation tools (e.g. PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, SPICE)
  • Solid understanding of analogue and digital design principles
  • Experience in:
    • Filter design and implementation
    • Control systems for power conversion
    • Thermal management techniques
    • Design for compliance (EMC, safety standards)
  • Experience defining requirements, specifications, and test procedures
  • Experience in system integration and validation

Desirable Skills

  • Experience working with high voltage systems up to 5kV
  • Thermal modelling experience
  • Understanding of motor design and control techniques
  • Embedded C programming experience

Why Apply?

  • Opportunity to lead the development of high-impact, high-voltage power systems
  • Work on technically challenging, cutting-edge projects
  • Influence system architecture and product direction
  • Join a team where engineering excellence and innovation are at the core
