Job Description
Power Electronics Engineer (System-Level – Inverters & Drives)
Location: Woking
Employment Type: Full-Time
Department: Engineering / Product Development
Reports To: Engineering Manager or Technical Lead
About the Role
On behalf of our client, we are seeking an experienced Power Electronics Engineer with a strong background in system-level design and integration of inverter and motor drive technologies. The ideal candidate will be responsible for leading the development, optimisation, and validation of high-performance power electronic systems for industrial, and automotive technologies.
You will work cross-functionally with hardware, control, and system engineering teams to deliver efficient, reliable, and scalable inverter and drive solutions from concept through production.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the system-level design, modelling, and integration of inverter and drive technologies, including motor inverters, DC/DC converters, and related power conversion systems.
- Analyse system requirements and translate them into power architecture specifications and component-level requirements.
- Support the selection and validation of semiconductors (IGBT, SiC, GaN), gate drivers, passive components, and thermal management solutions.
- Develop system simulation models (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSIM) to predict electrical, thermal, and dynamic performance.
- Work closely with control design teams to ensure tight integration between hardware and software control loops.
- Perform design verification testing, efficiency optimisation, EMI/EMC compliance, and system validation under real-world operating conditions.
- Lead root cause analysis and continuous improvement activities for system performance and reliability.
- Collaborate with mechanical and thermal engineers on packaging, cooling, and layout optimisation.
- Prepare technical documentation, design reviews, and customer technical presentations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or equivalent field.
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in design and development of power conversion systems, with emphasis on inverters and motor drives.
- Deep understanding of topologies (e.g., three-phase inverters, DC/DC converters, multilevel inverters) and related control strategies (FOC, PWM, DTC, etc.).
- Experience with SiC and GaN-based power devices and associated gate drive circuits.
- Strong analytical and modelling skills using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, PSIM, or PLECS.
- Familiarity with EMI/EMC design principles, thermal design, and safety standards (IEC, UL, ISO).
- Hands-on experience with hardware testing, lab instrumentation, and system commissioning.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with automotive or renewable energy inverter systems.
- Exposure to functional safety (ISO 26262) or reliability engineering.
- Knowledge of digital control platforms (DSPs, FPGAs, or microcontrollers) and embedded software basics.
- Familiarity with system modelling and co-simulation environments.
