Job Description

Senior FPGA Engineer

Location: Commutable from Brighton, Crawley, Chichester, or Portsmouth

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior FPGA Engineer to join an established engineering team and take technical ownership of HDL architecture for next-generation power supply platforms. This role offers a mix of hands-on FPGA design and technical leadership, working closely with systems, hardware, and software teams across the full product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to all phases of the FPGA development lifecycle, including requirements capture, architecture, design, implementation, integration, verification, and test.
  • Define and own advanced digital and FPGA architectures for complex power supply and embedded systems.
  • Apply sound engineering principles to develop robust, scalable, and high-performance digital designs.
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineers and Program Management to decompose and translate system-level requirements into FPGA solutions.
  • Conduct and participate in design and peer reviews, providing technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (hardware, firmware, software, mechanical, and manufacturing) to define interfaces and overall system performance.
  • Support design for manufacture (DFM), considering supply-chain constraints and common manufacturing methods.
  • Provide engineering support to safety, quality, and customer-facing teams as required.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong FPGA development experience using VHDL (preferred) or Verilog.
  • 8+ years’ experience in one or more of the following:
  • FPGA / HDL design
  • Digital design simulation and verification
  • Research and development environments
  • Proven experience developing:
  • Reusable, maintainable, and testable HDL architectures
  • Self-checking test benches and verification frameworks
  • Solid understanding of digital circuit operation, debugging, and failure analysis.
  • Experience with high-speed digital electronics, FPGA-based systems, and embedded processor integration.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.

Desirable Skills

  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Git-based source control.
  • Exposure to regulated or safety-critical environments is a plus.
