Overview

Ampere Recruitment is actively seeking an experienced Power Electronics Engineering Manager to lead the design and development of advanced power-electronics products from concept through to production. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with people management, customer engagement, and cross-functional collaboration, ensuring products meet performance, cost, quality, and delivery targets.

You will be accountable for the entire product development lifecycle, from interpreting customer specifications and defining topologies, through design execution, validation, and production support.

Key Responsibilities

Product Design & Development Leadership

  • Lead and take full accountability for the end-to-end product development lifecycle, ensuring designs are optimised for cost, quality, manufacturability, reliability, and delivery
  • Review and interpret customer specifications and requirements, translating them into robust technical solutions
  • Define and lead the design concept, architecture, and power topology, working closely with electrical, mechanical, magnetics, PCB, and EMC engineers
  • Ensure all product design and development activities comply with internal standards, procedures, and quality systems
  • Plan and commit development schedules and milestones in alignment with Project Management and wider business objectives
  • Monitor and report programme status throughout the development cycle, covering:
    • Electrical and power performance
    • Mechanical and packaging design
    • Magnetics
    • PCB layout
    • EMC / EMI compliance
    • Materials, safety, reliability, and manufacturability
  • Lead technical problem-solving sessions, making informed decisions to minimise risk, cost, and schedule impact
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of all design documentation, records, and technical reports

Customer & Commercial Interface

  • Act as the technical point of contact for customers during development, including regular design reviews and technical discussions
  • Support RFQ and RFI activities, defining design concepts, architectures, and estimated development schedules
  • Lead the creation of technical proposals, working with costing teams to finalise commercial inputs
  • Provide technical guidance to Sales and Marketing during proposal and customer engagement phases
  • Communicate clearly with customers on technical queries, changes, and development progress

Team Leadership & Resource Management

  • Lead, manage, and mentor a multi-disciplinary power-electronics design team
  • Organise and allocate roles and responsibilities based on expertise, workload, and project priorities
  • Review and enhance individual and team performance, promoting professionalism, accountability, and collaboration
  • Plan and secure resources for current and future projects, including tools, equipment, and specialist support
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and identify training and development opportunities to strengthen team capability

Sustaining Engineering & Production Support

  • Provide senior technical support for sustaining products, including production and field issues
  • Lead or support root-cause analysis for field returns and manufacturing issues
  • Review and respond to customer change requests, assigning appropriate engineering support
  • Support handling of obsolete components, alternate sourcing, and design changes
  • Work closely with Factory QA and production teams to resolve design-related issues efficiently

Technology & Process Development

  • Collaborate with Advanced Engineering and Technical Core groups on technology development and transfer
  • Advise on best practices, procedures, and general product-design methodologies
  • Review and provide input on design procedures, policies, and technical documentation updates

Key Skills & Experience

  • Strong background in power electronics design (e.g. AC/DC, DC/DC, SMPS, resonant or isolated topologies)
  • Proven experience leading complex product development programmes
  • Ability to balance technical depth with commercial, cost, and schedule considerations
  • Experience managing and developing engineering teams
  • Confident communicator with customers, sales teams, and senior stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing, quality, EMC, reliability, and safety requirements
